Look no further, as we present to you a comprehensive guide that not only simplifies the process of acquiring your Private Hire Car Driver’s Vocational Licence (PDVL) or Taxi Driver Vocational Licence (TDVL), but also introduces you to our exciting new PDVL initiative under GrabRentals at Grab@Tampines.
Understanding PDVL/TDVL
For anyone looking to launch their professional driving career, getting a firm grasp on the PDVL and TDVL is a crucial first step. But what exactly are these vocational licences?
Private Hire Car Driver's Vocational Licence (PDVL)
Before you can start driving with Grab, or any private hire service, you must first acquire a PDVL. This licence proves that you’ve undergone the necessary training and possess the skills to deliver safe and reliable service to your passengers – a key requirement for all Grab drivers.
Taxi Driver's Vocational Licence (TDVL)
Thinking about becoming a taxi driver? You must first acquire a TDVL. This is a special licence given only to taxi drivers. Owning a TDVL signifies that you’ve undergone the necessary training, understand the regulations, and are prepared to provide a taxi service in a safe and reliable manner.

Begin by going into the GoBusiness Licensing portal with your SingPass. Navigate to the licence application section and apply for a new licence, then search for either PDVL/TDVL to select the licence you are applying for.

This brings you to the application form for you to fill in, hence do make sure you have the following documents with you before you fill up the application form:
- NRIC
- Passport-sized photo
- Education certificates to show proof of ability to speak and read basic English (At least a D7 grade or equivalent in English for GCE “O”/”N” Level OR at least a Level 3 pass in the Listening, Reading and Speaking modules of the Workplace Literacy and Numeracy (WPLN) assessments.)
- Pay a non-refundable application fee of $40 via credit card, debit card or PayPal.
Once you have completed the application form, you’ll receive an approval-to-attend-course (ATC letter) from LTA within 15 working days if all your documents are in order.
This letter is crucial as it allows you to sign up for the vocational licence course. You will have four months from the date of this approval letter to register for the course, and one year to complete the course and pass the test. Remember to bring this letter with you on your exam day!
2. Medical Check-up and Chest X-ray
You’ll need to have a medical check-up and a chest X-ray done. You can do this at any clinic or hospital in Singapore, or at SATA Diagnostic Centres. Make sure to get the LTA’s Medical Examination Form filled out by a registered medical practitioner, and have a radiologist sign your chest X-ray report.
Once done, remember to hand over your medical records to the training provider when you sign up for the course.
