Grab celebrates 10 years in Vietnam by boosting commitments to drive digital economy growth
Vietnam, 8 October, 2024 – Grab, the leading everyday superapp in Southeast Asia, today celebrated its 10th anniversary in Vietnam and outlined its vision, emphasizing its commitment to driving socio-economic progress and creating lasting impact in Vietnam for years to come. It aims to enhance accessibility to digital services, create more economic empowerment for locals, and support the government’s key national priorities, including driving the growth of Vietnam’s digital economy.
In celebration of its 10th anniversary, Grab Vietnam has rolled out a wide range of activities starting from August to express gratitude and appreciation to its partners and consumers. These include partner appreciation programs with attractive prizes and consumer promotions offering numerous rewards.
Mr. Alejandro Osorio, Managing Director of Grab Vietnam, said: “Over the past 10 years, we have developed a multi-service superapp with profound ecosystem synergies, one that benefits all stakeholders, be it consumers, driver-partners, merchant-partners, brand partners or the wider community. Our ecosystem and tech innovations now uniquely position us to expand our positive impact to the benefit of all Vietnamese people in the long term.”
Grab started Vietnam in 2014 with its GrabTaxi service, and quickly became an integral part of daily life. Today, people use Grab for transport, food, groceries and parcel delivery, payments, and crucially, for income opportunities. Over the last decade, Grab has been steadfast in its commitment to enhancing the lives of its consumers, partners, and communities across Vietnam.
Making digital services more accessible: Today, Grab and Grab partners serve tens of millions of meals and rides every month, to millions of consumers across Vietnam – with more than 15 offerings that cater to all budgets, while consistently delivering quality and reliable experiences.
Improving livelihoods: In the last decade, millions of people in Vietnam have used Grab to supplement their income.
- On average, 2W driver-partners saw more than 30% increase in rides per online hour in 2024 compared to 2014, the year GrabBike was launched. Grab’s driver-partners can toggle between different services, and are able to take on multiple orders in a single journey. Grab also works to reduce wait times of driver-partners at food merchants, enabling them to improve their productivity.
- From 2018, the year GrabFood was launched, to 2024, merchant-partners’ average monthly revenue through Grab increased by 3 times. With Grab, more merchants, especially MSMEs, are able to digitalise their businesses in an increasingly online world.
- Empowering partners: To date, more than 200,000 driver-partners have been empowered to grow skillsets through training courses on GrabAcademy. Grab has also collaborated with bank and financial institutions to leverage alternative data points on behaviors and driving patterns so that the bank partner can properly perform their assessments, enabling driver- and merchant-partners to obtain access to financial services. In 2023, the number of driver- and merchant-partners taking up loans from bank partners grew threefold since the service was made available in 2020.
- Supporting communities: Grab and its users have built 8 bridges in remote areas, helping over 7,000 locals commute more safely, especially during the flood season. It also supported local farmers and agri cooperatives through initiatives such as the GrabConnect project which provided digital skills training for over 1,000 of them, and the Summer Fruit Festival, helping sell more than 800 tonnes of local produce through GrabMart.
“I’ve been with Grab since they first started in Vietnam, and it’s become a big part of my life. Thanks to Grab, I’ve been able to earn enough to renovate our home and support my son’s education at HCMC University of Medicine and Pharmacy. I’ve even been able to buy more household appliances for my family with their financial support program,” said Nguyễn Minh Hùng, a Grab driver-partner in HCM city.
Boosting tech innovations: Tech innovation and experimentations have underpinned Grab’s advancements. Grab established an R&D center in HCM city in 2017 to leverage local tech talents, allowing Grab to build tailormade solutions and enhance user experiences across the region. This includes creating features to make every ride safer for millions of commuters and partners, such as Share my ride, Driver authentication, Real-time speeding alerts etc.
Committed to accelerating access to better opportunities in the digital economy for every Vietnamese
To mark its 10th anniversary in Vietnam, Grab outlined its vision for the future, focusing on 3 key areas to continue creating meaningful impact and promoting socio-economic progress in Vietnam:
1. PEOPLE – Empowering more people in more ways through digitalisation
Over the last few years, Vietnam’s digital economy has emerged as one of the region’s fastest growing. Its e-commerce market boasts an average annual growth rate of 16-30% over the past four years – the highest in the world. However, the digital divide remains with rural regions who often have lower levels of digital literacy. A large number of micro-, small- and medium-sized businesses (MSMEs) in particular – who account for more than 90% of enterprises in Vietnam – still lack access to digital capabilities and are underserved.
In line with the national agenda for digital transformation, Grab aims to accelerate its digital inclusion initiatives by expanding service access to more underserved areas, developing more use cases and improving digital literacy for partners and communities through public and private partnerships.
2. CITY – Be a driving force of inclusive city development across Vietnam
In support of government plans for public infrastructure development, Grab is committed to creating seamless mobility by partnering with cities’ governments to facilitate first-mile and last-mile trips, as well as contributing to sustainability through tree planting projects that help restore natural forests and plastic waste reduction initiatives. In line with Vietnam’s green growth strategy, Grab will work to encourage hyper-efficient transportation, and explore partnerships to support driver-partners in transitioning to more eco-friendly vehicles.
3. INNOVATION – Unleash disruptive and relevant new technology at scale
Grab is among the earliest adopters of data science in the region, with over 1,000 AI/ML models, one of the highest in the region, and is dedicated to staying attuned to the daily lives of local communities, ensuring innovations meet their needs. Its approach to all technology, including ML, data science, LLMs, and AI, is focused on solving real-world issues. As part of its mission to support the growth of the local tech ecosystem, Grab plans to expand its R&D capabilities in Vietnam, which will play a pivotal role in cultivating local tech expertise.
“As we celebrate our 10th anniversary, we are grateful for the trust and support of Vietnamese consumers, partners, and communities. Our technology has created income opportunities and improved daily life for millions. We see tremendous potential to expand our impact in Vietnam by aligning with government socio-economic priorities. We aim to foster positive changes, uplift livelihoods, shape vibrant cities, and drive innovation. We envision a future where every Vietnamese has access to better opportunities in the digital economy, and we are committed to accelerating Vietnam toward that future.” said Alejandro Osorio.
