Grab Showcases its Innovations to Strengthen Ecosystem
.
- Grab Thailand reaffirms its position as a leading regional technology company, committing to become an AI-led organization that develops solutions to meet consumer and partner needs and create positive societal impact.
- The company focuses on three main drivers of innovation: Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), and In-app Solutions.
- Recent innovations include the Family Account for family ride tracking and payment; Food Lockers for delivery storage; and Indoor Maps to help driver-partners navigate buildings efficiently.
Worachat Luxkanalode, Country Head of Grab Thailand, stated, “For over a decade, Grab has adhered to its mission of GrabForGood, continuously developing and leveraging technology to improve the quality of life for people in the region. Our technology development starts with studying consumer behavior and insights, as well as understanding the needs of people in our ecosystem, including driver- and merchant-partners. We also stay updated on societal interests and challenges to develop solutions with a broader impact. We have focused on developing technology to address four key areas: Efficiency, Productivity, User Experience, and Social Impact.”
“In Thailand, the adoption of technology, including AI, to strengthen our business has been a core strategy under the 4A approach announced earlier this year, helping us maintain leadership in both mobility and delivery services. This year, we are focusing on three key technological areas: AI, IoT, and In-app Solutions to meet the needs of people in our ecosystem,” added Worachat.
Key Technology Highlights of the Year Include:
-
Technology that is Centered on the Needs of “Users”
All of Grab’s services and innovations are designed to enhance convenience and address everyday pain points for consumers in the digital age. In addition to the enhanced Group Order feature, this year Grab has introduced two new innovations: Family Account, a feature that allows users to book rides, track trips, chat with drivers, and pay for family members, and Food Lockers, designed for office workers who often order food via the app but may be stuck in meetings, allowing both customers and riders more flexibility.
-
Technology that Improves Efficiency for “Drivers”
Grab’s technology for drivers focuses on convenience and improving service efficiency, thereby increasing their earning opportunities. This includes the integration of AI and Machine Learning (ML) to optimize job allocation. Recent innovations include Just-in-Time Allocation, which uses ML to assess food preparation times before assigning orders to drivers, reducing their waiting time at restaurants, and Indoor Maps, which help delivery-partners find restaurants within malls and buildings, saving up to 20% of their time.
-
Technology that Expands Business Opportunities for “Merchant-Partners”
Helping small and medium-sized entrepreneurs, particularly micro, small, and medium entrepreneurs (MSMEs) to increase business opportunities and attract more customers is one of Grab’s priorities. This includes Grab’s latest innovation: using AI to generate highly realistic food images, thereby increasing sales opportunities for Grab’s merchant-partners. Grab also combines proprietary data science models and the wealth of unique data and insights we have to extend credit to merchant-partners, many of whom may not be able to obtain loans from banks and traditional financial institutions due to a lack of formal credit history
-
Technology that Creates “Social and Environmental” Impacts
Grab places great importance on safety, which has been a key driver of app development since its inception. The company continuously enhances technology to ensure peace of mind for both users and drivers through pre-trip, during-trip, and post-trip innovations. Examples include Biometric Authentication for drivers, Real-time Trip Monitoring, and AudioProtect, which records audio during trips to prevent conflicts or provide evidence in disputes. On the environmental side, Grab has developed features like the Plastic Cutlery Opt-Out and Carbon Offset, which allow users to donate toward carbon credits or tree planting. These features have been well-received by users.
-
Technology to Enhance “Employee” Capabilities
As Grab moves toward becoming an AI-led Organization, the company has intensified its tech development and training programs, particularly in Generative AI, to equip employees with the necessary skills. Grab’s internal tech team has developed tools such as GrabGPT, an internal tool powered by a selection of Large Language Models (LLMs) that allows users to generate text, images and more through a ChatGPT-like interface, in a secure environment, and Mystique, a tool to assist with design and creative tasks, significantly reducing the workload for marketing and creative teams.
“At Grab, we don’t prioritize developing the most cutting-edge technology but instead focus on the goals and utility of technology for our ecosystem. These technologies and innovations must truly solve problems and create tangible positive change. We will continue to pursue our GrabForGood mission to improve quality of life and propel Southeast Asia toward the future,” Worachat concluded.
