Grab Reveals 2024’s Year-End Fun Facts for “Ride-Hailing and Delivery Services”

Thailand, December 18th 2024 – Grab, a leading superapp in Southeast Asia, has unveiled its 2024’s year-end statistics, covering its on-demand transportation and delivery services in Thailand. Over the past year, Grab’s ride-hailing services remained popular among both Thais and international travelers, especially the newly introduced GrabCar SAVER, which saw a growth of over 400%. “Moo Deng fever” also boosted trips to Khao Kheow Open Zoo by 267%, while tourists from China and Southeast Asia were among the top five international users, primarily using the service for trips to malls and shopping districts.

On the food delivery side, Thai cuisine and iced Americanos maintained their positions as the most ordered items. A viral trend surrounding “Butterbear” drove its sales to record highs, while Dubai chocolate, premium fruit teas, and healthy smoothies emerged as trending items of the year.

On-Demand Ride-Hailing Services:

Continued Growth in Ride-Hailing Fueled by Travel Demand, “Moo Deng Fever” and a Vibrant Event Lineup

  • Ride-hailing services continued to grow in 2024, fueled by both local and international demand. The newly launched GrabCar SAVER, designed for budget-conscious passengers, saw a remarkable 400% growth in key cities.
  • The viral sensation of “Moo Deng Fever” not only attracted global tourists to Thailand, but also boosted ride-hailing trips to Khao Kheow Open Zoo by 267%.
  • Thailand’s government policy to establish the country as a “World-Class Event Hub” spurred an increase in event-related travel, with ride-hailing trips to major venues like Rajamangala Stadium, Queen Sirikit National Convention Center, Impact Arena, and BITEC Bangna growing by 25%.

International Tourists Rely on Grab for Airport, Shopping, and Secondary City Travel

  • Grab’s price transparency and convenience are key factors to attract international tourists, with ride-hailing trips from and to airports increasing by over 67%. The top five nationalities using Grab were Singaporean, Malaysian, Chinese, Indonesian, and Vietnamese.
  • Shopping destinations remained a favorite, with ICONSIAM, CentralWorld, Siam Paragon, Khao San Road, and Chatuchak Market leading as the most-visited spots. New entrants like EMSphere, a lifestyle mall in Sukhumvit, also gained traction among international users.
  • Government efforts to promote secondary cities spurred ride-hailing demand in provinces like Chiang Rai, Tak, Udon Thani, Ubon Ratchathani, and Phitsanulok, with usage growing by 90%.

Top Emerging Features: Advance Booking and  EV Rides

  • Revamped to allow bookings up to seven days in advance, the Advance Booking feature saw a surge in popularity, especially for airport rides, with coverage including Suvarnabhumi, Don Mueang, Phuket, Chiang Mai, and Krabi.
  • Reflecting growing environmental awareness, the Grab EV Rides feature saw over 200% increase in usage, offering an easy way to book EVs as a first-choice option.

Food Delivery Services: 

“Thai Food” and “Iced Americanos” Remain User Favorites

  • Thai food remained the top choice for food delivery, with budget-friendly dishes like Som Tum, fried chicken, Hainanese chicken rice, grilled pork skewers, and pork-based dishes like sweet pork stew and pork leg rice leading the charts. The influence of the “Moo Deng Fever” drove pork dish orders like Thai stew pork belly with eggs or “Kai Paloh” up by over 38% in September.
  • Among beverages, iced Americanos led the way with 5 million cups sold, followed by Thai iced tea, particularly the viral Slurpee Thai Tea, along with iced espressos, matcha lattes, and bubble tea.

Trending Items of the Year

  • Butterbear: The viral and adorable mascot of the brand drove sales up by a staggering 1,200%.
  • Premium Fruit Teas: Imported brands like JIAN CHA, CHAGEE, and Naixue gained popularity, growing 10 times, with the Cheese Cream Grape Tea becoming a standout item.
  • Healthy Smoothies: Inspired by trends like “Erawon Smoothies” from the US, the viral Oh! Juice Smoothies sales skyrocketed by 400% within 3 months.
  • Dubai Chocolate: The viral chocolate bar packed with pistachios and knafeh, as well as pistachio-infused desserts from brands like The Rolling Pinn, saw unprecedented demand, with a 20-fold increase in growth.

Popular Features: Group Orders and Dine-Out

  • Upgraded to allow up to 10 participants with split-payment options, the Group Order feature led to a twofold increase in orders.
  • The return of dining out drove growth in the Dine Out feature by 11 times in the last quarter, especially at buffet restaurants like Mo-Mo Paradise, Kouen, and Sukishi.
