Grab Launches EV Fleets in Five Major Cities with “End-to-End Rental” Model
.
Grab Thailand is accelerating the expansion of its EV programme by introducing an “End-to-End Rental” model, designed to encourage drivers and riders outside Bangkok to transition to electric vehicles. This initiative is made possible through strategic partnerships with STROM, a leader in EV technology and manufacturing in Thailand, and AutoDrive EV, a prominent electric taxi rental provider. The model allows Grab drivers to rent electric motorbikes for food delivery in Pattaya, Khon Kaen, Chiang Mai, and Korat, and electric taxis for transport services in Phuket. Currently, over 3,000 drivers in upcountry provinces are using electric vehicles, with plans to extend to Chonburi, Surat Thani, Songkhla (Hat Yai), and Udon Thani by next year.
Worachat Luxkanarode, Country Head of Grab Thailand, stated, “Since the launch of the Grab EV programme in Bangkok and vicinity areas nearly three years ago, we’ve received positive feedback from drivers eager to switch to EVs for ride-hailing and delivery services, as well as from environmentally conscious users. To further support the adoption of EVs, we are expanding the programme to other provinces with the ‘End-to-End EV Rental’ model. This offers drivers a convenient and affordable way to rent EVs without the added costs of insurance and maintenance. This year, we’ve piloted the programme in five major cities: Pattaya, Khon Kaen, Chiang Mai, Korat, and Phuket.”
The “End-to-End EV Rental” model initiated by Grab Thailand includes two options:
- End-to-End Electric Motorbike Rental: In collaboration with STROM, Grab has expanded its electric motorbike rental services in Pattaya, Khon Kaen, Chiang Mai, and Korat. Two models are available: the STROM Gorilla Standard 2000W and the STROM Gorilla Pro 3000W, which are compact and ideal for short-distance commutes. Starting at just 138 Baht per day, the package includes unlimited 24-hour battery swaps, additional equipment such as rear racks, mobile phone holders, and battery chargers for in-home or station charging. It also offers access to a backup vehicle in emergencies, maintenance support, and motor insurance (Class 3 Plus). Dedicated support staff are available throughout the rental period at no extra charge.
- Electric Taxi Rental: Partnering with AutoDrive EV, Grab has expanded electric taxi rental services in Phuket, catering to taxi drivers serving both local and international tourists. The MG EP, a spacious electric vehicle suitable for tourists and luggage, is available for rental starting at 920 Baht per day. The package includes motor insurance (Class 1), access to a backup vehicle in emergencies, and regular maintenance.
“Expanding our EV programme to cities beyond Bangkok demonstrates Grab Thailand’s commitment to promoting EV adoption and reducing environmental impact. Our affordable rental rates help drivers lower their costs while contributing to our GrabForGood mission, which seeks to improve people’s quality of life and reduce environmental impact through sustainable technology. Next year, we plan to extend electric motorbike rentals to four more provinces—Chonburi, Surat Thani, Songkhla (Hat Yai), and Udon Thani—and introduce electric taxi rentals in Chiang Mai,” Worachat concluded.
