We introduced group rides for people to ride together and save on fares

People are sharing rides with one another to save on fares, especially when they’re headed home after gatherings. So we’ve been working on ways to make it more convenient to pick up and drop off friends during a Grab ride. We launched a new feature that allows you to set up a group ride, invite up to three other friends to join the group, add stops and save on fares. Apart from leaving a venue with your friends and dropping them off along the way, group rides also allow you to pick them up from different locations and head to a common destination.

Group rides were built on our existing multi-stop rides feature that allows users to add multiple drop-off points within a single booking. However, multi-stop rides only allow one user to coordinate the ride. Others on board are also unable to track their own journeys.

With group rides, everyone in the group can participate in planning a trip and get real-time updates on the status of the ride throughout.

Remark: Currently, Group Rides feature is only available in Chonburi, Khon Kaen, and Nakhon Ratchasima only.

Setting up a group ride

To get started, set up a group ride by tapping the widget on the transport page. Choose between a group departure (same pickup point, different drop-off points) or arrival (different pickup points, same drop-off point).

Next, the host passenger inputs the first pickup and drop-off points of the trip. They can then invite up to two other friends to the ride by sharing the link through their preferred messaging platforms.

Friends can join the ride by clicking the link, after which they will be prompted to add their stop. Once everyone has entered their stops, the host passenger can proceed to book a ride.

Grab takes care of route optimisation on the passengers’ behalf by suggesting the best route based on the stops of the ride.

Real-time ride updates

Previously, sharing a ride with friends meant that only the user who made the booking can get updates on the ride. So people in the group would have to rely on getting updates from that person.

Now, all members in the group ride can be kept in the loop via their Grab apps too.
