Creating equal access to income opportunity

Everyone matters. At Grab, we’re on a journey to create a level playing field. It’s a big social goal, but Grab believes that it’s possible with technology, and like-minded partners such as our merchant-partners and the Malaysia Federation of the Deaf (MFD).

Sometimes, a small change from each of us is all it takes to make the biggest difference. One of the key milestones of #TechUntukSemua is enabling income opportunities for over 700 Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) on the Grab platform.

Enabling merchants to include the Deaf

All rakyat Malaysia deserve equal access to income opportunities. As Grab, we want to create a better Malaysia, by tapping on to technology to allow better inclusivity. That’s why we’ve launched Scan to Order! It enables consumers to enjoy a seamless dine-in experience, Grab merchant-partners to employ PWDs, and provides PWDs with better career opportunities.

What is Scan to Order?

Scan to Order is a contactless dine-in solution that lets consumers place orders and pay for them—with their mobile phones. Think of it as GrabPay, with a menu.

How does Scan to Order work?

Consumer scans the QR code at their table with their phone camera.
Consumer browses the menu and adds items to cart.
Consumer places the order and pays for it.
Orders are sent to your GrabMerchant app for your kitchen to start preparing.

Through Scan to Order, F&B outlets can create equal job opportunities and responsibilities for the Deaf. For this campaign, we are partnering with the Malaysia Federation of the Deaf (MFD) to continue to push boundaries with Scan to Order.

FAQs on Scan to Order

For dine-in consumers

All Deaf employees will wear a pin on their uniform.

Scan the QR code at your table, and you’ll be directed to the menu. Just browse the menu, add your order(s) to the cart, and tap on ‘Order’.

There’s a Sign Language Dictionary on the Grab app homepage. It shows you several basic signs that you could use in a restaurant setting. Alternatively, you can use your mobile phone as a communication tool. Just type your request in your mobile phone and show it to the Deaf employee.

Please share this page with them for updates on job vacancies.

For GrabFood Merchants

At this moment, this campaign is at its pilot phase to allow Grab to continuously learn and improve. We will reach out to you when we are ready to fully take off!

If you are not a GrabFood merchant-partner, you may join us by registering here: https://www.grab.com/my/merchant/food

Grab will provide job coaches to assist merchants in communicating with their Deaf employee(s) for 3 months. Additionally, Grab will provide an onboarding kit that comprises a handbook, a pin for each Deaf employee, the QR code, and a window decal.

Leave that to Grab’s partner, Malaysia Federation of the Deaf (MFD), who’ll source and provide basic training to the Deaf talent before they join the F&B industry.

Yes. We will keep you informed once the feature is widely available for you to opt into.

Minimal set-up is required! The QR codes will be prepared by Grab and fret not, the GrabFood team will guide you through it all!

Together, we made it happen!

The encouraging results were only possible due to the support from the Malaysia Federation of the Deaf (MFD) and Grab merchant-partners! They took the leap with Grab, and allowed for change to happen. Not forgetting, all dine-in customers who kept an open mind and embraced this change beautifully!
