BSD City, 9 May 2019 – In March, Grab announced a strategic partnership in technology development with Sinar Mas Land in the BSD City area. As a follow-up, Grab and Sinar Mas Land now announce the launch of a pilot project of an innovative mobility solution: GrabWheels. The service comes in the form of a green e-scooter and is available selected locations at BSD City area during the pilot period until mid-2019.
Executive Director Grab Indonesia, Ongki Kurniawan, said: “As an everyday super app, we strive to provide services with a hyperlocal approach, aligning with the needs of local communities that will improve their everyday lives. As an answer to people’s needs of an easy transportation, we are very proud to work together with Sinar Mas Land to launch GrabWheels, the first e-scooter in Indonesia. We hope that GrabWheels can be a green, innovative and easy-to-use mobility solution for people especially to those who live in smart city areas such as BSD City.”
While introducing GrabWheels, Irawan Harahap, Project Leader Digital Hub – Sinar Mas Land, stated: “As a pioneer in integrated smart digital city, BSD City is committed to keep improving its infrastructure and digital facilities to support the daily life and the business in this independent city. The GrabWheels service will leverage an integrated and innovative transportation system in the BSD City area. We are confident that this pilot program with Grab is a good start to provide the green transportation options that are aligned with our vision to realize healthier lifestyles for our communities.”
This transportation technology innovation is the beginning of a joint-research by Sinar Mas Land and Grab to integrate several public transportation options. A multimodal transportation system has been applied in BSD City, starting from long-distance transportation using bus and Commuter Line to short-distance transportation using BSD Link shuttle bus and now will be added with GrabWheels e-scooter. This is a part of BSD City development to be an integrated smart digital city. This development is also realized through a Digital Hub as a hub for digital community.
Digital Hub has an area of 25.86 Ha located in the south part of Green Office Park BSD City and potential to be the center of technology like Silicon Valley in the United States. A number of education institutions which focused on coding has also been in BSD City such as Apple Developer Academy, Binar Academy, Techpolitan, Purwadhika, Grab Innovation Lab, Prasetya Mulya, IULI to Unika Atma Jaya. These institutions will be able to support developers talent to some companies in BSD City such as unilever, a multinational company and also startup companies to tech companies. With a good built environment, BSD City is developed to be the digital talent pool and a conducive digital economy area. Grab and Sinar Mas Land hope that GrabWheels will strengthen BSD City’s position as the first integrated smart digital city in Indonesia.
Keen to experience GrabWheels in BSD City?
Grab users can easily access this service by downloading the GrabWheels beta app on their iOS and Android devices during the pilot period. The users then go to a GrabWheels parking station in selected location at BSD City. They can then unlock the e-scooter just by scanning the barcode using the application to start exploring BSD City. Once the user reaches his or her destination, the GrabWheels app will navigate them to the nearest parking station to return the e-scooter.
During the pilot period, Grab users can experience the GrabWheels service free of charge. Other than that, to assure users’ safety, Grab will educate them on safe riding behavior through in-app messages and the user will be strongly recommended to wear a helmet as a crucial safety feature. During the pilot period, Grab will also present designated resources to help users with technical issues.
Grab is very open to provide GrabWheels services in other locations in Jabodetabek, for partners who are interested in providing this service can contact GrabWheels team at wheels.partners@grab.com.
